Enquiry lists sometimes carry the note "please include gasket weights". It looks like a detail, but it is needed for air freight, customs declarations and stock planning.
What sets the weight
- Size and pressure class: Higher classes mean a wider, thicker outer ring
- Type: CG has an outer ring only, CGI has inner and outer; the inner ring adds noticeable weight
- Winding thickness: Besides the standard 4.5 mm there are 3.2 mm and heavier options
- Material density: Carbon steel, stainless and nickel alloys differ
- Filler: Graphite and PTFE weigh little against metal, but the share shows in large diameters
There is therefore no single answer to "how much does a gasket weigh"; it is calculated item by item.
Type codes
| Code | Construction |
|---|---|
| R | Sealing element only |
| CG | With outer (centring) ring |
| CGI | With inner and outer rings |
| RIR | With inner ring only |
At the same size and class, CGI is heavier than CG. From 24" upwards a single gasket weighs kilograms, and on a palletised shipment that difference adds up.
Where weight data is used
- Air freight: Charged on volumetric or actual weight, whichever is higher
- Customs: Net and gross weight are declared
- Site logistics: Large gaskets are not a one person lift
- Stock control: Checking small items by weight is quicker than counting
How we provide it
When an item list arrives we calculate unit weight from size, class, type and material and add it to the quotation. Packing format and gross weight are shared before shipment.
Send your list and we will come back with weight and packing details: enquiry form. For configuration see technical data.
FAQ
Why is a CGI gasket heavier?
The inner ring is extra metal, so at the same size and class it weighs more than a CG.
Is weight included in quotations by default?
It is calculated item by item and added when requested.
Do large gaskets need special handling?
From 24" upwards they are heavy and delicate; supported handling protects the winding from crushing.
