High temperature line material for iron and steel plants

Lines in an iron and steel plant carry three difficult conditions at once: high temperature, abrasive dust and continuous thermal cycling. Furnace surroundings, gas cleaning, cooling water, oxygen and compressed air lines each call for a different material class. Alloy pipe comes forward on hot lines, wear allowance on dust laden lines, and large bore, quickly available items on the cooling circuit.

Typical lines and material approach

LineDriving conditionCommon choice
Furnace and stack areaHigh temperature, cyclingA335 P11/P22, stainless grades
Gas cleaningAbrasive dustHeavy wall carbon steel, wear allowance
Cooling waterLarge bore, continuous dutyWelded pipe, butterfly valves
Compressed air and oxygenCleanliness, oil freeDegreased items, suitable gaskets
Hydraulics and lubricationPressure, vibrationStainless pipe, forged fittings

Oil free delivery for oxygen lines needs special preparation and must be stated with the enquiry.

Thermal cycling fatigues the joint

A line that heats and cools loosens its flanged joints far faster than one at steady temperature. The leak causes we see most often are:

  • Gasket type not matched to service temperature — graphite filler is more stable when hot
  • Stud grade not matched to temperature — B16 instead of B7 in hot service
  • No torque check after the first heat up
  • Closing the joint without cleaning residue and scratches from the face

Outage planning and stock supply

During planned outages, lead time turns directly into lost production. We hold fast moving flanges, gaskets and studs and nuts in stock, and plan alloy and large bore items against the outage schedule. Share your annual consumption list and we can prepare framework pricing and a stock plan for repeating items.

Frequently asked questions

Which gasket is used on high temperature lines?
Spiral wound gaskets are the common answer. Above 450 °C graphite filler is more stable than PTFE, and the winding material is matched to the line material.

Do you supply oil free items for oxygen lines?
Yes, on request items are degreased and separately packed. Because this preparation takes extra time it should be stated with the enquiry.

Do you prepare stock plans before outages?
Yes. When an annual consumption list is shared we prepare framework pricing and a stock plan aligned with the outage schedule.
