Floating ball valves giving economical sealing in small and medium bores.
In a floating ball valve the ball is pushed against the seat by line pressure, which creates the seal. Its simple construction and low cost make it the most common isolation solution in small and medium sizes. Full bore versions give negligible pressure drop and allow pigging.
As size and pressure rise, so does the force on the ball; beyond that point a trunnion mounted valve is more suitable. Check fire safe requirements in flammable service and the seat temperature limit on frequently cycled lines.
